Obituary for
Eleanor Young
Eleanor Young passed away on January 18, 2012 at Knox Nursing Center in Rockland. With her family near her and many caring staff at Knox, Eleanor spent the last year of her life grateful to be taken care of so well by the wonderful team at Knox.
The daughter of Maynard and Olga (Sjostedt) Young of Rockland, Maine, Eleanor was born on Oct. 27, 1924. She graduated from Rockland High School and married her childhood sweetheart, Fred Bartlett Young on September 18, 1943.
As a young woman, Eleanor worked at Newbert’s Restaurant and the Rockland Telephone Company. In addition to raising her three sons, she also continued to work with her husband at the North Lubec Canning Co. Together Eleanor and Fred also built a workshop and a house in Warren; she did the masonry for the fireplace herself. They also built a 28’ wooden lobster boat, named Charmaran. Her favorite job was lobster fishing in Rockland harbor with her husband. Eleanor also enjoyed fishing and archery with her family, and travelled to the Moosehead Lake region every year, camping and fishing with her husband. Together with her sister, Rosalie, they also adventured on many bus trips around the U.S. and Canada. Eleanor was very creative; the family made Christmas wreaths together. She also enjoyed painting, writing, needlework, playing the guitar and piano as well as singing. She had a beautiful voice and her husband would always ask her to sing to him. Fred and Eleanor were members of the Aldersgate Methodist Church in Rockland.
Eleanor had an amazing work ethic and continued to work until the age of 82. Other jobs included the office at W.T. Grant’s Store, the booking agent at Maine Coast Cruises with Capt. Guild of the Victory Chimes, clerical work at the Rockland Courier Gazette and finally the receptionist at Moss Tent Works in Belfast. Everyone who knew Eleanor always remarked about her contagious positive, optimistic upbeat attitude; she was always a pleasure to be around. In her retirement, she would still enjoy cooking and loved to collect recipes and experiment with original creations.
After sixty years of marriage, Eleanor was predeceased by her husband, Fred, in October 2003. Now she leaves her three sons, Craig Young and his wife, Pauline of Berwick, Me., Kevin Young and his wife Mary Ellen of Johnson City, Tenn., and Eric Young and his wife Trish of Kennebunk, Me. Eleanor is also survived by her brother, Charles Young and his wife Maribel of Knoxville, Tenn., her sister Rosalie Hawthorne of Thomaston, Me., as well as nine grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held next May at Sawyer Cemetery in Warren. Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to Aldersgate United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 511, Rockland, Me. 04841.
