Obituary for Christina "Tina" Torres-York

Christina "Tina" Torres-York
Christina “Tina” Torres-York, 45, passed away on March 18, 2016 in a tragic automobile accident in Washington, ME.

Tina was born in Stamford, CT on September 25, 1970, the daughter of the late Xavier Torres and the late Irene Torres. Tina grew up in Stamford and attended school there until her Sophomore year in High School. In 1986, Tina’s family moved to Warren where Tina completed her high school years and graduated in 1988 from Medomak Valley High School. After high school, Tina moved to Massachusetts where she began her college career at Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill.

Tina met her husband, Kenneth “Kenny” York in 1991 through mutual friends. They were married on September 4, 1994 at the Baptist Church in Warren. The two settled in Warren to raise their three children and care for Tina’s parents. Tina learned how to be a care giver at a young age. After her mother fell ill when Tina was just in middle school, Tina became a second mother to her siblings. She helped to nurture and provide for them during their elementary years until they were teenagers. Tina helped care for her father until his passing in 2011 and was the primary care giver for her mother until Irene passed in 2016.

Tina was a caring and loving mother, sister and friend. To her, family was everything. She enjoyed cooking large meals for family gatherings and holidays and hosting family picnics. She enjoyed camping with her family and watching her children at the tractor pulls. She especially loved watching her children’s sporting events. Tina also enjoyed scrapbooking all her family memories and making hand-made cards for loved ones. She was in training for the 2016 Tri For A Cure, to honor her mother.

Tina was an active member of the community and volunteered for multiple organizations over the years.

Tina earned her Bachelors of Science in Mental Health and Human Services through the University of Maine in Augusta and was due to graduate in May, 2016. She was currently participating in an internship in which she was finding great joy in helping those who were working to overcome addiction. During her tenure at school, Tina formed new bonds with her advisers and met new friends, all of whom Tina felt became part of her extended family. Tina was looking forward to a future career in which she could help those struggling with addiction.

Tina is survived by her husband Kenneth York of Warren and their children Joshua, Elizabeth and Anthony; Her siblings, Theresa Kenniston and her husband, Darren, of Warren and their children, Alex and Ashley; Antoinette Torres-Jones and her husband, James Jones, of Washington and their children, Kamrynne and Samantha, Tamara Casas and her husband, Josiah, of Washington and their children, Alexander and Kaylee, and Matthew Torres and his wife, Jency, of Boston, Va., and their children, Alyjah and Mya; Her in-laws, Charles and Geri York of Warren, and Michael and Kimberly York of Warren and their children, Jacob, Nickolas and Katie; Her Aunt Julie and her husband Steven Eppinger of Lexington,MA; Her Aunt Ann Marie Laukkanen Mones of Stamford,CT; Her Aunt Lisa Laukkanen of San Francisco,CA; Her God-mother Gerry O’Connor of Western Australia; Her life long friend, Jodi Castellano; Her extended family, Joe Decibus of Columbia Falls and his daughter Aleigha; and many other beloved extended family members.

Friends are welcome to join the family for a time of visitation on Wednesday, March 30 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hall's of Thomaston, 78 Main St. in Thomaston. Rosary prayers will be recited at 6:30 p.m.

A service to celebrate Tina's life will be held on Thursday, March 31st at 1 p.m. at the Warren Baptist Church on Main Street in Warren, with the Rev. Dr. Linwood Welch officiating.

Burial will follow in the Sawyer Cemetery in Warren. A reception will be held at the Warren Masonic Hall, Route 90, Warren following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Spruce Street Residence, Spruce Street, Augusta, ME 04330.
