Obituary for Roy M Winchenbach

Roy M  Winchenbach
Roy M. Winchenbach, 92, of Waldoboro passed away peacefully at the Sussman House in Rockport, Maine on March 23rd with his loving family by his side. Roy was born May 11, 1924 in Waldoboro, ME to parents Millard Winchenbach and Ruth Studley Winchenbach. Roy grew up in Waldoboro and graduated from Waldoboro High School class of 1942. He briefly worked at The Hyde Winless Bath Iron Works Facility after graduating. He then served in the United States Navy during WWII.

After the war Roy came back to Waldoboro and worked in the lobstering and clamming industry. He married Cynthia House on April 17th, 1948. He was a hard worker providing for his family at the Waldoboro Locker Plant, Bear Hill Market as well as raking blueberries.

An unfortunate accident in 1951 caused Roy to lose one of his legs but that never slowed him down . At the time of his accident he was in the process of building a house for his family. Due to that the townspeople and his friends rallied together to finish his house . Roy never forgot those good deeds and was always wanting to give back his time by being one of the original founders of the Waldoboro Little League. He coached Little League, Babe Ruth and American Legion teams for over 13 years. He also umpired school team games as well. He himself was a talented baseball player having played for the Waldoboro “Townies” team which he also managed .

He was given a job by Nan Weston of Waldoboro who taught him the Insurance business which Roy later purchased from her and ran for 25 years as Roy’s Insurance Agency. He sold that business to W.C. Ladd in Rockland and he continued employment with them for 5 years.

Roy enjoyed hunting birds and deer, any type of fishing, Roy loved to play cards, was a strong swimmer a a bowler and was an owner of Standard Bred Horses. He was a member of the Maine Harness Horsemans Assoc. and the U.S. Trotters Association. A member of the Charles C. Lilly American Legion Post 149 , The Soule- Shuman VFW Post 4524 and a 50 year year member of King Solomons Lodge of Masons being its secretary for over 25 years all in Waldoboro. He was also a member of the Keystone Club, a Director of the Waldoboro Savings and Loan and a mortgage appraiser for them. He so enjoyed and looked forward to spending Labor Day weekends with his wife and friends at Moosehead Lake as well as wintering at his home in Zephyr Hills, Florida.

Roy was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Virgil,Rodney and Earl, his sisters Elsie Martin, Arlene Burns, and Faye Winchenbach.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 69 years- Cynthia Winchenbach, of Waldoboro, ME. His Son Alan “Lanny”Winchenbach and his wife Debra of Waldoboro, ME his daughter Jane Fairservice and her husband Stanley of Wiscasset, ME. He is also survived by his grandchildren Adam Fairservice of Pittston, ME , Olivia Coyne of Colorado and Nathaniel Winchenbach of Waldoboro, ME. Along with 7 great grandchildren many nieces, nephews and friends.

A Funeral Service will be held on Monday March 27th, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Hall’s of Waldoboro, ME with Rev. Bob Dorr officiating. Roy will be laid to rest in the German Cemetery, in Waldoboro in the Spring.
