Obituary for Carol E Howe

Carol Edgelow Howe, 93 died Sunday, April 30, 2017 at Pioneer Ridge Health Center in Lawrence, Kansas.

Carol was born July 14, 1923, in Springfield, Massachusetts, the oldest of four daughters of Arthur F.G. Edgelow and Cybel K.S. Edgelow. She attended the MacDuffie School in Springfield and Bishop Strachan School in Toronto, and graduated from Wellesley College in 1945.

She married the Reverend Halsey DeWolf Howe in 1946. During their 61-year marriage, they lived in Springfield, Massachusetts; Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts; Hamilton, Massachusetts; Gladwyne, Pennsylvania; Providence, Rhode Island; Springfield, Vermont; Rockland, Maine; and Boothbay Harbor, Maine.

She was a writer and gardener all her life. She began a gardening column for the newspaper in 1974, and had a nearly unbroken record of weekly columns until the final column ("Grow It In Maine") in September 2016, just before moving from Boothbay Harbor to Lawrence, Kansas to be near three of her children.

Carol volunteered for many projects and organizations through her life. She loved to sing and always found a choral group to join, no matter where she lived. She had a deep concern for the natural world, and a longstanding interest in eliminating hunger. As a member of Garden Writers of America, she actively promoted the public service program Plant a Row for the Hungry.

Her husband Halsey preceded her in death in 2007. She is survived by her sister, Margaret Hale, of Peterborough, New Hampshire, by her children David (Barbara Smiley) of Bend, Oregon, Faith (Charles Lavaty) of Madison, Wisconsin, Mark (Sarah) of Burlington, Vermont, Deborah of Lincoln, Massachusetts, and Mary (Richard Stein), Thomas (Kate Dinneen), and Priscilla, all of Lawrence, Kansas, and by grandchildren William Stein (Naomi Welch), Timothy Howe, Dylan Howe, Skyler Howe, Cecelia DeKorne, and Helen DeKorne, and by many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your local food pantry, and if you have a garden, plant a row for the hungry in Carol's memory.

Funeral services will be held at St. Columba's Church, Boothbay Harbor on Friday, May 19, 2017 at 2 p.m.
