Obituary for Victor R Lord

Victor R Lord
Monhegan Island, Maine

Victor Richard Lord, 70, died August 27, 2017, from complications of lung cancer. He was born August 14, 1947, in Rochester, N.H., and raised in Lebanon, Maine, a son of Maurice C. Lord and Althea S. (Cole) Lord. He graduated from Spaulding High School in Rochester, NH in 1965 going on to graduate with honors from the University of Maine in Orono, with a Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1973. Between his sophomore and junior years at UMO, he worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in their co-op engineering program for 21 months. While finishing his degree, he also worked as an assistant and instructor at UMO for several semesters. Later in 1973, he moved to Monhegan Island where he held a variety of positions including owning and operating the Monhegan House Hotel. He started Monhegan Restorations, a business which he pursued to present time, building and restoring homes, caretaking cottages, and repair and maintenance of Island buildings.
He was a leader in the local Alcoholics Anonymous group and provided numerous people with support and encouragement on their road to recovery. Victor celebrated 29 years of sobriety on August 18.
His wisdom and integrity made him a powerful role-model and leader in his small community of Monhegan Island. His innovation and forward-thinking is evident around the island including starting the first power company, finding solutions to municipal challenges, fire prevention and he was one of the founding members of the emergency rescue service.
He leaves his wife Susan E. (Gilbert) Lord, a son Kole A. Lord and daughter-in-law Tara L. Hire of Monhegan, Maine, a stepdaughter Zoe A. Zanadakis of Falmouth, Maine, a step-grandson Ronald W. Peterson of Portland, Maine, a sister Carole L. Lord of Lebanon, Maine, as well as the whole-community of Monhegan Island. He is predeceased by his first wife Jean E. Lord of Monhegan, Maine.
He will be interred at the Evergreen Cemetery in Berwick, Maine.
A memorial service is planned for September 16 at 1 pm at the Monhegan Church with refreshments following the service at the Trailing Yew.
