He saved the Day

In 1985, my husband Harry and I hired a  builder (not Victor) to build a smal kitchen on our small cottage.  This man had a reputation for being very skilled but also a reputation for being unable to finish jobs.   We left the Island in October, being assured by him that work would begin at once and we could fly out from Chicago in January to see how the work was going,.  This seemed like a fine idea;  we would experience the island in mid-winter, pick out linoleum for the floor and formica for the  counter-tops and give him a deadline to help him stay on track.  Not so.

January approached and we got a panicky letter explaining how there had been terrible storms, material shortages, illness, etc and to put off our trip til spring since the work hadn't gone far enough to visit yet.

So we answered that we would arrive on March 7th on non-refundable air tickets.

To make a long story short, the week before we arrived this builder finally began the job.  He broke thru the outside of the cottage and started work, rounding up every able-bodied man available on the island,  They framed in the kitchen, framed in a deck, covered it all with blue plastic, and met our boat in a snowstorm. The best part of this visit was that we got to see the island under fresh snow.  Victor was the main man who continued the work.  He was steadfast, honest, good natured and  hardworking and when the  job was finally done he became our caretaker.  A few years later Victor and helpers built our wonderful new wing, doubling the size of the cottage, and everyone was so impressed with how well it was constructed that he became to go-to builder for exceptional restoration and new work on the island.

It has been so painful to say goodbye to this dear man.  My love to you, Victor, wherever your are, and to susan and Carole and Kole and Tara.
