Obituary for Ethel L Powell (Lehto)

Ethel Lehto Powell, 87, of South Thomaston died July 18th at the Knox Center in Rockland. Ethel was an amazing lady who got to take the step she had looked forward to for so many years. There can be absolutely no doubt that the words she heard from her Lord were, Well done, my good and faithful servant. Ethel was born October 13, 1930 in Canton, MA. to Victor Lehto and Impi Manninen Lehto.

Ethel grew up in Canton, MA. and graduated from Canton High School. She graduated from business school in Boston. She married Walter Powell in 1952. She was active running political campaigns while she lived in Massachusetts. Ethel and Walter lived in Massachusetts, New Jersey, and moved to Maine in 1972. She was an executive secretary at the Samoset Resort, and at Pen Bay Medical Center. She was active as a Cub Scout Den Mother, and as a member of the Finnish American Society in So. Thomaston and the Trinity Baptist Missionary Church in Thomaston.

She discovered a talent for painting and drawing at the age of 70. She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She made sweaters, mittens, and afghans for many of her family members. Ethel was well known for making the best snickerdoodles. She was an eloquent, loving person and was very organized in all
of her pursuits.

She was predeceased by her parents, siblings, and by her husband, Walter Powell.

She is survived by a daughter, Karen Wheelis and her husband Larry of Union, Sons, Robert Powell and his wife Debbie of So. Thomaston, Glenn Powell and his wife Gail of NYC, Grandchildren, Christopher Wheelis of Milwaukee,WI, Scott Wheelis of Bowdoin, Robert Wheelis and his wife Amy of Warren, Andrew Wheelis and his wife April of Stafford,VA, Jessica Roberts and her husband Nathan of Friendship, Robert Powell of VA, Matthew Powell of NYC and eight great grandchildren.

Friends are welcome to join the family for a time of visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, July 23rd at the Hall Funeral Home, 78 Main Street, Thomaston. The service to celebrate Ethel’s life will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 24th at the Trinity Baptist Missionary Church, 65 Gleason Street, Thomaston with Larry
Wheelis officiating. Burial will follow in the North Parish Cemetery, Wiley’s Corner Road, St. George.
