Obituary for Minnie W. Young (Watts)

Minnie W. Young (Watts)
MINNIE W. YOUNG, 1925-2011

Minnie W. Young, resident of the Knox Center for Long-Term Care in Rockland, and formerly a long-time resident of Warren, passed away on July 15, 2011 after a long illness. Born Minnie R. Watts on November 20, 1925 to Henry Hammond Watts and Jessie Lelia Watts of Warren, she was educated in Warren schools through the first term in high school. As a young girl, she sold blueberries around town from a four-quart box that her father had made for her.

She left home as a teenager to work for the Peabody family of Warren as a housekeeper, and later worked in the Knox Woolen Mill in the 1940s. Minnie married Stanley Ernest Young of Warren on Nov. 8, 1946 and set up housekeeping in Warren. After Stanley passed away in May, 1957 , Minnie gave herself completely to the raising of her four young children, choosing to be at home during their formative years and to make ends meet on a widow’s pension.

She loved nothing more than to have her children's friends over, either playing football in the back yard, playing baseball in the field next door, or playing board games and card games in the kitchen, often feeding lunch to a small army in the process. After they were all in their teenage years, she supplemented her income with babysitting and housekeeping jobs. She also worked part-time in the Erickson egg-processing plant in Warren.

A devout Christian, Minnie was a member of the Warren Baptist Church from 1976 until her death. She also frequently collected for the American Red Cross.

Minnie was an avid baseball fan, listening to her beloved Red Sox games on WRKD, fondly dreaming of the time that the team would finally win the World Series in her lifetime, which, of course, came true in 2004.

She is predeceased by her husband, and by her brother Jack L. Watts, of Warren (1978)

She is survived by her brother Paul R. Watts of Rockland, her daughter Katheryn Small and her husband Dennis of West Rockport, her son Gerald S. Young of Warren, her son Sherwood E. Young of Warren and his wife, Barbara; her son Paul R. Young of Warren, her grandson Nathan S. Young of Warren, and by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

Funeral arrangements are with the Hall Funeral Home in Waldoboro, with visiting hours on Tuesday July 19 from 6pm to 8pm. The funeral service will be held at the Warren Baptist Church at 11am Wednesday, with Dr. Linwood Welch officiating.

Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Warren Free Public Library, 282 Main Street, Warren, ME 04864.
