Obituary for Dwight Nickerson Eames

Dwight Nickerson Eames
Dwight Nickerson Eames was born in Boothbay Harbor in 1929. He spent all his childhood summers here. His school years were spent in Hartford, CT. He liked to draw and paint at an early age and made art his lifelong career. He graduated from Trinity College in Hartford, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree, and after serving in the U.S. Marines, studied at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1957.
Dwight worked as an Art Director in several agencies in New York and New Hampshire before forming his own design studio in the late sixties. He was well known for the creative, unique logos and advertising pieces he produced for his clients.
Dwight returned to the Boothbay region and settled on Southport on land he purchased from his granduncle, C. Fred Greenleaf in the early fifties. He designed and built his own house on this property and viewed it as his largest and most interesting sculpture. He always looked forward to family gatherings, loved telling stories and jokes, and until his Parkinson’s disease prevented it, he fished every chance he got, keeping his fishing gear in his car so he’d be ready if he saw a likely spot. His camera accompanied him as well since he would continually see scenes worthy of a drawing or a painting. He stopped his artwork when he could no longer produce the quality of work he demanded of himself.
Dwight is survived by: his wife of 39 years, Jane Eastwick Eames; brother, Dr. Frederick G. Eames of Waterville, ME; sons, Jeffrey C. Eames and his wife Rachel of New Hampshire, Cooke N. Eames and his wife Anne of Southport, ME, and John E. Eames and his wife Heather of California; daughter, Amanda E. Twamley and husband Mike of Colorado; stepsons, Joel D. Fritz and his wife Sherry of California and Kyle D. Fritz and fiancée Kristen Grant of South Berwick, ME; stepdaughters, Robbi F. Portela and her husband Bill of Windsor, ME and Carla F. Allen of Oregon; local grandchildren, Miles N. Eames and Erica R. Eames of Southport, ME and 16 more grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren from across the country; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Irene (Nickerson) and Butler M. Eames and his brother, John M. Eames.
Donations may be made in Dwight’s name to: the Irene and Butler Eames Arts Scholarship, c/o Superintendant of Schools, Emery Ln., Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538; Maine Parkinson Society (www.maineparkinsonsociety.org); or to any charity of your choice.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay, followed by interment at Oceanview Cemetery and a reception back at Hall Funeral Home. A celebration of Dwight’s life will be held during the summer of 2016 with the date, time, and place to be announced.

Services have been entrusted to Hall Funeral Home and Tribute Center of Boothbay. Condolences may be shared by visiting www.hallfuneralhomes.com
