Obituary for Stephen Christian Melgard

Stephen Christian  Melgard

Stephen Christian Melgard, 75, survived beyond expectation with cancer and passed on July 16, 2018 at Togus in Augusta, Maine, with his family by his side. He was born the son of Earl Forsythe Melgard and Margaret Elizabeth (Dow) Melgard on April 27, 1943 in Calais, Maine.

Stephen graduated from Thomaston High School in the Class of 1961 and from the University of Maine at Orono in 1965. After graduation Stephen joined the Army in June of 1965 and was discharged in 1970. He served in the 82nd Airborne Division and was a Vietnam Veteran. He received a commendation as a Jungle expert, and attended the Army Intelligence School. After his tour of duty he attended the University of Maine at Orono and achieved his MBA in 1971.

Stephen’s heart touched everyone in his path. He was intensely curious about people and learning about how the world works. He had a big presence and a generous heart. His sacred place was out in the Maine woods.

Stephen was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was the CEO of an International Specialty Rubber Fabrication Business in Chicago for 25 years. He retired in 2004 to his homes in Maine and Florida.

He was predeceased by his parents, Earl F. Melgard and Margaret Dow Melgard and by his brother Peter D. Melgard of Washington, Maine.

He is survived by his wife Mary Lowell Melgard of Punta Gorda, FL, daughters, Christa Jean Faitz of LaGrange Park, IL, Victoria Elizabeth Forsman of Marina Del Rey, CA, Tiffany Lowelle Brassard of Readfield, ME, grandsons, Richard Capalby, Jr. of Punta Gorda, FL, Ryker Capalby of La Grange, IL and Phoenix Forsman of Marina Del Rey, CA, sisters Jean Wakeford of Punta Gorda, FL and Andrea Weltman of Venice, FL, and sister-in-law Mildred Melgard of Washington, ME.


Visiting hours will be on Saturday, July 21, 2018 from 5-7 p.m. at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main Street, Waldoboro. A Memorial service for Stephen will be held on Sunday, July 22, 2018 at1:00 p.m. at the Washington Village Church, 33 Liberty Road, in Washington, Maine with Pastor Brad Bean officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Stephen’s name to Conquer Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 896076, Charlotte, NC 28289-6076.
