Obituary for Evangeline B. Gibson

Print
Our mother, grandmother, and friend Evangeline B. Gibson passed away Oct. 17, 2018, after a short battle with acute leukemia. She was born in Brockton, Mass., to Benjamin C. Barbour and Eva MacArthur Barbour.

The family subsequently moved to Warren to the homestead that is now the Beneva Farm in the beautiful St. George River valley. She met the love of her life, John, in Warren in high school and they married in 1949. They had 62 wonderful years together until his death in 2011. They lived in Union until 1962 and then moved to Norridgewock where she lived until her passing.

Eve attended hair dressing school in Brockton immediately after high school, never working professionally, but took care of many friends’ and family members' styling needs! In Norridgewock, she volunteered for many different local organizations. She was primarily a homemaker and make a wonderful home she did. She was always concerned and involved in children’s activities and is fondly remembered for that. She was a very giving person.

She bequeathed to her children the value of hard work, integrity, love, compassion and the importance of treating others according to the golden rule. She made friends easily and cherished them greatly. She loved going out to eat with the “Over-the-Hill Gang,” playing cards and bowling. She was a prime performer in her day in the old “minstrel” shows in Warren and Union. She loved to sing and yodel and had a beautiful voice almost up to the day she died. Her favorite song in her latter days was “I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart” by Patsy Montana.

She is survived by daughter Sharon Chadwick and husband Gerald of Warren; sons Jack Gibson and wife Gail of Norridgewock, Jeffrey B. Gibson of San Francisco; and daughter Paige Green and husband Tom of Skowhegan. She leaves her grandchildren, Reid Gibson and wife Kara, Lisa (Gibson) Landry and husband Todd, Aubyn (Chadwick) Ehle and husband Tim, Shelby Chadwick and husband Nick Faustini, Ashley Green and Kyle Green. Her great-grandchildren are Caris and Afton Ehle, Briana Landry, Mya and Juliana Gibson, Camden Green and Jason Aubin. She is also survived by brother Morgan Barbour and wife Sarah of Bellevue, Wash., and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Special thanks go to her caregivers and MaineGeneral Hospice, which helped made her last years a happy and comfortable period in her life. She leaves a very special friend, Sally Wheaton, who gave Mom unconditional love and care for many years.

The family would like to thank all of the many friends and family members for their love and support for Mom. She loved you all. A graveside service will be held at the Cushing Cemetery on North Pond Road, Warren, Saturday, Oct. 20, at 10 a.m. A celebration of life will follow at Tammy and Mark Hilchey’s Harmony Hill Stock Farm on North Pond Road.

It is with a deep sense of gratitude that we ask those of you wanting to make a donation in Mom’s name to do so to MaineGeneral Hospice, 10 Water St., Suite 307, Waterville, ME, 04901.

“How green was my valley then and the valley of them that lived there.”

Arrangements are entrusted to Halls of Waldoboro. Condolences may be shared at www.hallfuneralhomes.com
