Jane M. Spofford a.k.a. Plain Jane from Maine passed away peacefully October 19, 2018 at Safe
Havens, St. Andrews Village, Boothbay Harbor, Maine.
She was born November 20, 1933 in Pemaquid Harbor, Maine to William and Dorothy (Oldham)
Brown.
Upon graduation from Gorham Teachers College, she taught school in the Bath and Boothbay
Harbor areas. Jane was also a swimming instructor and she taught many locals to swim.
Eventually, she and husband Ron built the North Star Motel and Restaurant. They owned and
operated the business for 25+ years and became lifetime friends with many of their guests and
employees. Jane worked at the Boothbay Harbor Chamber of Commerce and several other local
businesses, always working with people-something she was great at and thoroughly enjoyed.
After retirement, Jane worked at Cap’N Fish’s hotel for many seasons. She loved greeting new
and familiar guests. She was also co-owner of North Star Tours with Ron for 30 years.
Her love of people was evident from the moment you met her. Lots of loving smiles and
boundless positive attitude were always something to look forward to. Jane was a loving and
devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She felt very blessed to have her family so close by,
something she spoke about often. Her love of music shown throughout her life, although she
played the piano and lead many bus tour sing-a-longs, her biggest joy was listening to her
children Dick and Sally, play music.
Jane was predeceased by her parents, her husband Ron Spofford, brothers Lemuel and David
Brown, and niece Elizabeth Kelly.
She is survived by her loving children, Richard Spofford, Sally Carroll (Rob Cornell), and Laurie
Simmons (Richard), grandchildren; Will Carroll (Amber), Samantha Carroll, Chad Carroll(Jenna
Williams), Emily Spofford, Jared Spofford (Brittany Corson), Jacob Simmons, Lincoln Simmons
(Lindsey Smalley), Shawn Simmons (Ashley DiGiulian) and Thomas Cornell. Great grandchildren;
Sydney, Liam, Kayla, Levi, Laiken and Bristol. Daughter-in-law Bridget Malmsten and son-in-law
Dan Carroll. Nieces; Diane Randlett, Tammy Devore, Bonnie Stover, Ellen Brown, Lisa Peterson.
Nephew; Dan Brown.
Sister-in-laws; Marie Spofford, Kay Brown and Pat Brown.
At the request of Jane, there will be a private family service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be
