Phyllis M. Moulton, 100, of Portland, formerly of Waldoboro, died January 4th in Portland at the Cedars Nursing Care Center. Phyllis was born June 28, 1918 in Waldoboro to Avery Sidelinger and Audrey Mae (Castner) Sidelinger. She grew up in Waldoboro and graduated in the first class of the new Waldoboro High School. She married Robert Moulton in the fall of 1937 and they moved to Portland where she worked at B&M Baked Bean Co. from 1938 to 1945. In 1949, she went to work at Cushman’s Bakery. She later worked as a leather stitcher for 22 years for Herman Shoe Factory and Stride Rite until she retired in 1985 at the age of 67.
She never really retired as she went on to work at One City Center as a cleaner and also at John Martins Manor Inn and worked as a nanny. Phyllis was a woman of many talents and was known for crocheting slippers, doilies, mittens, hats and scarves and making her famous fruit cakes for Christmas presents. She was also an amazing seamstress making her own bathing suits, quilts and sewing for others.
She also enjoyed spending time at her camp on Highland Lake with her husband, Robert, and working together in their garden canning her vegetables and making wine. For the past twenty years, she enjoyed spending Christmas with her nephew Gary and his wife Maureen and going for outings at Little Sebago every summer.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Moulton, Sr. and by her son, Alvin Moulton.
She is survived by her son, Robert “Sonny” Moulton, Jr. of Portland, her grandchildren Ludger Moulton and Jeanine Moulton of Gorham, and Lisa Verthiem of Australia; her great grandchildren Jolee Mitchell, Ludger Mitchell, Jr., Nicole Mitchell and Patrick Smith.
She will be dearly missed by her nephew Gary Sidelinger and his wife Maureen of Cumberland, her great nephews, Ben Sidelinger of Georgia, Andrew Sidelinger and his wife Roma of Oregon and their children, Grady & Nolan; her nephew Brent Hamilton and his wife Deana of Warren and his son, Chase; her nephew Gregg Hamilton of Tennessee and his children, Cooper and Kelsey; her cousin, Bob Benner of Waldoboro and family; as well as her dear friends Tom & Liz Crane of Portland and their daughters and many other friends in Portland.
A Funeral Service will be held at Hall’s Funeral Home on Saturday, January 12th, at 1:00 P.M., 949 Main Street, Waldoboro. Burial will be in the Shuman Cemetery in Waldoboro.
