Christine E. Wellman, 93, went to be with her Lord and Savior with her family by her side at Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast on April 14, 2019. Christine was born on May 26, 1925 in North Union the daughter of the late Oscar F. Upham and Almacia Wellman.

Christine grew up locally and was a graduate of Union High School, class of 1943. After graduation she married William S. Orne, Sr. and moved to Monhegan. Christine worked at the Inn on the island as a chambermaid. She always loved Monhegan, the beauty it held and meeting new artists, including Alice Stoddard. After the death of her husband William in 1959, Christine and her sons, Mike and Billy, moved to Stickney’s Corner. On May 24, 1963 she married Estern Wellman and they moved to the house in West Washington next to his parents’ home. In 1970 they had their first boarding home for veterans all from Togus. In 1975 they built another house but continued to run the boarding home until retirement.

Christine loved to cook. She would always cook her famous chicken casserole for the church and family gatherings. She loved going to lawn sales and playing beano. Being a devout Christian, she took pleasure reading her bible and being a witness to people. She was smart, very artistic; she always kept up on the local news and current events. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family

Christine was a member of the South Liberty Baptist Church and the Somerville Baptist Church.

Christine was my neighbor since we moved to Maine in 1971, and I always thought of her as a kind and gracious lady. She often invited me into to "come and sit a spell", and I am sorry that I didn't take her up on those offers. The painting of her is so exquisite. Her spirit shines through the lovely interpretation. Would love to know who did it. Sincerely, Libby Casas
