Obituary for Eula W Ossofsky
Eula Wood Ossofsky, 89, of Boothbay Harbor, Maine died peacefully on December 9, 2020 with the love of her family surrounding her. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, auntie, and friend.
Eula was born in Elmira, New York on May 23, 1931. She was the cherished daughter of Paul and Florence Wood.
Always working to help others in nursing-related fields, Eula had an exciting and challenging career. She was a nurse (graduating from St. James School of nursing in Hornell, New York), a Steuben County City Health nurse, caseworker for seasonal migratory farm workers, director of Medical Social Services at Arnot Ogden Memorial Hospital in Elmira, New York, director of Portland, Maine’s National Council of Aging, and an arthritis research nurse in Alexandria, Virginia.
When she retired, she and her beloved husband, Jack Ossofsky, moved to East Boothbay, Maine. She became a member of the St. Andrew’s Hospital Auxiliary, Boothbay Region YMCA, Lincoln Arts Festival, and the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor where she loved singing in the choir. She became president of the national organization, Older Women’s League and member of the Women’s sorority, PEO. Throughout her loving marriage with Jack, she enjoyed their many wonderful travel adventures, where she collected some of her treasured jewelry and decor.
Eula loved “living by the sea” and took in its beauty day and night. She loved collecting anything with blueberries, puffins, or hummingbirds. The grandchildren called her, Nanny Puffin, and delighted in counting her many puffins! She always had a special dish full of blueberry jelly beans for the grands and greats! If you heard loud cheering and coaching coming from her living room, you knew she was watching her beloved Boston Red Sox, Celtics, or Patriots! Eula also never backed down from a great debate, having an armload of facts to back up her point of view!
In later years, she loved being a snowbird in Ormond-By-The-Sea, Florida. There she added to her list of life long friends. She loved volunteering at the Ormond Beach Senior Center and serving meals at a shelter for the homeless through her church. When moving to St. Andrew’s Village five years ago, the entire staff and residents became her bonus family! She and her family have been deeply appreciative of their friendship and compassionate care. Special thank you’s go to her steadfast personal care helpers: Susie Giles, Barbara Marr, and Amanda Lord.
Eula was known for her love and pride for her family. She leaves behind her three devoted children, seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren: Paula and Dave Thompson (Holly Thompson, Henry and Eva; Noel and Peter), Stephen and Barbara Walden (Joshua and Jacqueline; and Christopher) and Trish and Michael Harrison (Joe and Adrianne Harrison, Maia and Will; Emily and Jamie Beaudoin, Avery and Andrew). She is also survived by nieces Renee Pickard and Christine Houghtaling and nephew, Chuck Delany.
Heartfelt gratitude for her peaceful and kind end of life care at Miles Memorial Hospital and especially for our guardian angel, Debbie Monck.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, plans to have a family celebration of Eula’s life will be made when they can all be together.
