Obituary for Emma E. Simmons

Emma E. Simmons, 84, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2021 at her home in Friendship. She was born September 7, 1936 in Thomaston, Maine, the daughter of Esther (Swanson) and Walter Matson.

Emma attended Thomaston High School – “The Sea Breeze” and graduated in the Class of 1954. Her first job as a teenager was at Wallace’s Market in Friendship. She was a 33-year employee at Sylvania in Waldoboro.

Emma was a very independent and a hard worker her whole life; these traits she passed on to her children and grandchildren. She was fortunate in her later years to finally enjoy her special interest in traveling. She traveled to many places across the United States with her late husband Donald Simmons. She took pride in her home and kept herself busy with the upkeep of her beautiful yard and home. She was known to keep an “exceptionally” clean house. She has always adored and loved her cats, they were her “babies”. She was very much loved by all her family members, we all looked up to her and she was known to have a good judge of character.

Emma is predeceased by her parents Walter and Esther Matson, her husband Donald A. Simmons, brother Mike Matson, brother-in-law Robert Foster, son-in-law Mark Daggett, daughter-in-law Valerie J. Simmons, and grandson Shane Simmons and niece, Wanda Matson. She is survived by her sons Donald W. Simmons of Friendship and Keith A. Simmons of Friendship; daughter-in-law Karen Simmons of Friendship; daughters Dianne Daggett of Cushing and Annette Reed (Dave Sanbloom) of Friendship; sister Hilma Foster of Waldoboro; sister-in-law Dottie Simmons of Friendship; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 28, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Hall’s of Waldoboro, concessions to follow service. After concessions burial will be at the Harbor Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Emma’s name to Pope Memorial Humane Society, 25 Buttermilk Lane, Thomaston, ME 04861, 207-594-2200.
