Obituary for Olof L Anderson

Olof Lennart Anderson, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away in his home at the age of 89 on Saturday, September 18, 2021, surrounded by family and friends.

Olof was born on November 16, 1931 in New York City to Bernhard and Ingegerd Anderson, who were recent immigrants from Sweden.

He was educated in Yonkers public schools and was an Eagle Scout. He earned his B.S. (1953), and Ph.D(1966) in aerospace engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, New York. He married his wife, Evelyn Anderson, on June 17, 1956 and settled in Manchester, Connecticut the
following year.

He is survived by his two children, Elizabeth and Andrew Anderson, his three grandchildren Shulamith Jacobi, Benjamin Jacobi, and Bethany Roby, and his brother, Bernhard Anderson. Many others called Olof “Dad” because he, with Evie, loved and cared for them.

Early in his career, Olof worked for Boeing in Seattle and for the Arnold Engineering wind tunnel in Tullahoma, Tennessee. He joined United Technologies Research Center in East Hartford, Connecticut in 1956, where he conducted experimental and theoretical research for Pratt & Whitney, NASA, the Department of Defense, and the Atomic Entergy Commission. He published numerous papers in scientific journals and taught engineering at the Hartford Graduate Center, a branch of RPI.

Olof was active in Democratic politics in Manchester. He was elected to the Manchester City Council, during which he was instrumental in establishing Manchester Community College in 1963. In 1972 he switched to the Republican Party and never returned to active politics.

In 1990, Olof retired and moved with Evie to Thomaston, Maine. Together they were active in local nonprofit organizations, including the General Henry Knox Museum and the Thomaston Historical Society.

Hall Funeral and Cremation Center of Thomaston , 78 Main Street, has care of the arrangements.
