Obituary for Mary C. Stone
Mary Stone, 88, died suddenly at home in Warren with family by her side on July 22, 2022. Mary was born in Boston, MA on February 4, 1934 to Edith Cowhig. Raised by two aunts on Newbury Street. Mary went to public schools until the fourth grade then attended Catholic schools. She graduated from Notre Dame High school and from Emmanuel College in 1955 with a degree in history. She married Maj. Sayward Hall, Jr. in 1955 and lived throughout the country following Sayward’s military career. They eventually bought a home and settled in Thomaston with five children. Sayward was killed in the line of duty in Vietnam in 1965. Mary then married Theodore Stone in 1966 and had two more children.
Mary started her nursing career as a nurse’s aide at the old Knox Hospital in Rockland then moved to PBMC when it opened in 1975. She graduated from the University of Maine in Augusta as a registered nurse in 1978. Eventually retiring from the emergency department at PBMC in 2001. She was a member of the Knox County Nurse’s Guild and Beta Sigma Phi sorority for many years and formed many lifelong friendships.
Family came first for Mary. She was a wonderful cook and loved nothing more than having all her family over for dinner. She always made sure she had cookies in the freezer in case any of her grandchildren stopped by.
Mary was a voracious reader and joined a number of book clubs over the years. She had an extensive collection of books and loved swapping books with others. Mary also loved the theater and bought season tickets to the Brunswick Music Theater for many years.
She was predeceased by her husbands, Sayward and Theodore; Son, Sayward “Pete” Stone; Daughter, Nancy Aylward; and Granddaughter Carolyn Hall-Stone.
She is survived by her sons, Michael Hall-Stone (Linda) of Camden; Stephen Hall of Warren; Matthew Hall (Kathy Luce) of Warren; Daughters, Julie Russel (Greg) of Camden; Amy Smith (Everett) of Hope; Daughter-in-law, Valerie Stone of Thomaston; Sixteen Grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.
Friends are welcome to join the family for a time of visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. August 2nd at the Hall Funeral Home, 78 Main Street, Thomaston. A graveside service to celebrate Mary’s life will be held at 1 pm on August 3rd at the Village Cemetery, Erin Street, Thomaston.
