Dear Jennifer, John, Anya Rose, Matthew and Lin, Paul and Peter, Gene’s sister and Paul Daniels,
On behalf of Mr. Eugene C. Rainis, our Chair, Mr. Peter P. Mullen, our Chair Emeritus and of all the members of our Board of Trustees and everyone associated with the Gregorian University Foundation, please accept our sympathy on the occasion of Gene’s death. Gene had a very full and productive life, full of good works and charitable deeds, and you knew that he was dying of cancer and so had time to prepare yourselves. Yet there is still the final loss and separation. May God comfort and console all of us who loved Gene and give him full participation in eternal life. May his beloved Holy Spirit and his late wife Maureen receive him with open arms.
We have lost a very dear friend, a most generous benefactor and an exemplary model of Catholic living. Like Jesus, Gene and Maureen went around “doing good.” In recognition of this at our Dec. 3rd Board dinner Maureen and Gene will the recipients of the 2010 William R. Grant Award for Exceptionally Generous Leadership.
Since Gene was such a devout Catholic and led such a virtuous life, I am not sure that he now needs my prayers. However, I will celebrate five Masses for him; for all of you and everyone who loved him will need the Lord’s support as you move through the grieving process.
May the Lord give the whole McCarthy family the grace not to be overly saddened by Gene’s temporary absence but thankful and even joyful because of all the wonderful memories you have of him and of how loving and caring he was. Gene particularly expressed this love to each of you and to all his other loved ones and dear friends.
Given his truly caring diligence on behalf of other, it will not be long after his arrival in heaven that he will be busy seeing what he can do to assist you along your pilgrimage way to join him and all your loved ones in the company of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Again, please accept our sympathy and promise of continual prayers for Gene and for all of you. May Gene and all the faithful departed rest in peace, and may the Lord hold each of you gently in the palm of his hand as you move through the grieving process and bless you and all you do.
Affectionately, with our sympathy and prayers, in Him, Fr. Bob, S.J.
