A compassionate man
I grew up with the McCarthy boys since we all attend St David's school in NYC and I consider John to be one of my oldest and dearest friends. Growing up I always stayed at arms length of Dr McCarthy as I took him to be a strict disciplinarian and extremely regimented, not an adolescents favorite encounter. Upon reaching adulthood and spending more time with Dr McCarthy I realized that my adolescent impression's were way off the mark. The Doctor was not only well versed in every concievable subject, everything from weather patterns to the stock market to farming irrigation in developing countries. The most impressive was his deep belief in all matters of religious spiritualism which as I found over time was a major tenant of his life. He was extremely compassionate and helpful in sharing his thoughts with my friends and family who became ill and for that I will forever be grateful. He was always there in that regard and there was a strong connection between the medical and the spiritual world for Gene. I last time I saw the good Doctor was last winter when our families both met at the Miami Boat show. At this time Doctor McCarthy had been diagnosed with cancer and had been ill for some time but he was the one leading us from boat to boat always inquiring about my family and job and moving with energy and focus. I will always have fond memories of John's dad, Dr McCarthy as one who loved his family, cared about people and had a deep sense of where he fit in the Universe. I will miss you my friend, Andrew
