He was There for Us in Our Travels
My family has about a 50-year history with the McCarthys (I am 49) so I knew Dr. McCarthy almost all my life. His family and ours first met in Bolivia in the early '60's and from that point on were friends and as I was John's age, got to be friends with him, Joe, and Paul. Dr. and Mrs. McCarthy have always been very generous in putting me up when I visited, sometimes for extended periods of time. I worked in Maine at the hotel two summers in the '70s, and I was able to live with Joe, John, and Paul in the A frame. I have a lot of great memories from that time, and Dr. McCarthy enabled that by hiring me. One of my duties was to pick up Dr. McCarthy at the airport and we had a lot of long conversations in an old Cadillac with 300,000 miles on it (remember that, John and Paul?). A few years later I was in college at Columbia and needed a place to stay in between apartments. The McCarthys again stepped in and let me live with them (and Joe) for a few months in Brooklyn Heights, generously sharing not only their home, but meals and car rides into the city. Since that time other family members have made trips to New York City for the weekend and the McCarthys often hosted those visits. Dr. and Mrs. McCarthy also hired my wife in the '80's for his second opinion program, when we were just getting started in our careers, so again they took in a newly arrived traveler and provided a base from which to operate. Most recently, around 2000, I visited Smuggler's Cove in Maine with my children, wife, and parents, and once again Dr. McCarthy insisted we stay with him in the house across from the hotel, generously hosted many meals, and took us out in his boat sightseeing to places I'm sure he'd seen many times before. I could write so much more, but I wanted to stress how welcoming Dr. McCarthy and Maureen were to us as travelers so many times. I miss him and give my best wishes to John and Paul. I'm glad I have a lot of great memories from knowing Dr. McCarthy and all the McCarthys.
