Betty and John Eldridge were members of the choir at First Presbyterian Church in Newark, Delaware back in the 1960s. My parents volunteered my sister and me to babysit Phoebe and Matthew so that Betty and John could attend choir practice on Thursday nights together. My sister, Barbara, first started sitting for the children and then when she joined the choir, I got to babysit them. They didn't have a TV so I always took a book to read or listened to the radio along with their big black poodle. The kids were already for bed and just had a snack before going to bed. Back then we got $ .50 an hour for babysitting.
Betty was an extrovert and was always interested in other people's lives. Even many years later if I ran into her she always wanted to know about the family and what everyone was doing. I have fond memories of Betty and the family. I have to tell one story that my father told me. They always made fun of her New England accent and when she showed up at choir practice without John, they asked where he was and she replied: "He's pocking the ca" - which meant parking the car.
To the family, you were lucky to have your mother all these years. I am sorry for your loss.
Most sincerely, Sylvia (Dale) Williamson
