Charlie was a wonderful colleague and friend during my early years at Wheaton college. I particularly enjoyed his wry Maine wit and commentary on the world of academe - and his advice on buying used cars. Any event with Charlie in attendance was always a happy occasion. In my first year as Dean of Students, Charlie was serving as faculty marshall which put him in charge of the commencement processional. He was adamant that I should not fall into a boring cadence as I read the names of the graduates who crossed the platform to receive thieir diplomas. He thought there should be an alternating rhythm to the way students walked. This resulted in his gripping each student by the elbow as they paused at the edge of the platform and I was to read each name as he propelled them forward. This resulted in students taking several hasty steps with rather startled expressions on their faces. Not sure what the tune was but it was a fine performance. I will miss knowing that Charlie is no longer among us; my sincere condolences to his family and Maine friends.
