I came under Charlie's baton in September 1977 and continued with him in the Providence Singers until he retired. I am sure that others will have smarter and more clever things to say about his music making with the Singers. I just know that I blossomed in that chorus. He led with love.
I had a couple of chances to visit him in Portland when I traveled there to visit my son and his family. We had good talks about current things and, certainly, good memories of the Singers.
I also had the privilege of being his physician. Charlie would take trips to Thailand to teach music there. Before his travels he needed shots of gamma globulin. I would arrive at rehearsal and after rehearsal we would go find some dark part of the hall where he would drop his pants I would administer an injection. He never winced and that was a big needle!
I was blessed to know him.
