"Chaz" was my music professor, advisor and mentor at Wheaton College many years ago; and I still remember to this day so many things about him and so many things he taught me. He will always be a part of my life, and I am sad that he is gone; but happy that he is conducting a choir somewhere up in Heaven! God bless him, and his family -
What can you say about Charlie? I think what stands out most in my mind - other than his vigilant guardianship of the Capital Island Road - were the too infrequent discussions we shared. You could almost always count on a conversation with Charlie taking on unexpected depths. Willa Cather said," There are certain unalterable realities somewhere at the bottom of things."' Charlie seemed always to be trying to get at "the bottom of things". I will miss our talks. Charlie had a thoughtful life.

We knew Charlie for the years we lived in Providence and I sang in the Providence Singers under his fine leadership for more than 20 years. We loved his humor and wit, the Singers' parties out in Rehoboth and the wonderful ski trips at his camp in Maine. Lots of memories and stories out of those years. The wealth of music he brought to our choral repertoire continues to amaze me. I know I speak for the Singers who loved Charlie over the years when I say, Charlie, we loved you and the music! Rest well! Keep singing.
We were very sad to read today that our neighbor and dear friend had passed away. Both our families have been on Caleb street for years and there was not a day to see Charlie walking his dog down the street. He always had a big smile and always took the time to chat. He will be VERY missed! He always had stories of his adventures and times at his camp. I will remember one Thanksgiving when Serappa's daughter and her Girl Scouts Troop delivered him a Thanksgiving basket which Charlie was so thankful and he would thank her all the time for it. Caleb Street will not be the same without our friend, Charlie. He will be missed but not forgotten!!! RIP our friend.
Patricia McCarron Scagnoli, Wheaton College, MA Class of 1976
Charlie was the Director of the all-women Wheaton College Freshman Chorus and Wheaton College Choir during the years I attended from 1972 to 1976. I loved singing under Charlie's leadership as a member of both choral groups. We performed challenging works, especially since I was not schooled in music, and could hardly read music. Charlie had a good heart and loved every student, whether musically talented or not. I will miss his kind spirit and love of nature. He was so talented at conducting classical choral works, but was never a "stuffy professor" type or acted smarter than anyone else at the college.
There are those rare individuals you meet in life who leave an indelible mark on you--for the better. For me, Charles was one of those rare individuals ... I feel blessed to have known him.
