I met Greg a few hours before his death when I picked him and Nugget up while they were hitchhiking in Warren. I never stop for hitchhikers any more, but I was intrigued by Nugget walking with his backpack. I foster dogs for a rescue group that has a special fondness for pitbulls. So I stopped and gave Greg a ride to Waldoboro, where I live. He shared his story of his travels all over the country with Nugget. I offered to try to get his story publicized in a paper or magazine. But a few short hours later I opened the paper to discover that he'd died that morning. I'm still in shock over the strange coincidence that I would've met him just hours before his death. He left a deep impression on me even though I only knew him for a few minutes. I hope Nugget has a forever home with Greg's family.
